The Austrian Empire's legation to the United States was established in Washington, D.C. October 13, 1838. Wenzel Freiherr von Mareschall was the empire's first Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States. In 1867 the Austrian Empire became the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
