Lutheran Hospitals & Homes Society was organized at Fargo, N.D. in 1938, coming out of the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society. It owned and managed nursing homes and hospitals in the state, regional and later across the United States. In 1984 it became Lutheran Health Systems. In 1999 talks began with Samaritan Health System of Arizona towards a merger, which resulted in the creation of Banner Health System in 1999. In 2002 the Fargo headquarters was closed and by 2003 all facilities in North Dakota were sold.
