Photographer of Concord, Mass. Born Jan. 4, 1817 to pencilmaker William (Monroe) Munroe and Martha (Patty) Stone Munroe; brother of William Munroe (founding benefactor of Concord Free Public Library). Educated in Concord schools. Entered dry goods business in Boston at age 16. Earned living in various commercial enterprises in Boston, London, New Orleans, New York. Returned permanently to Concord in 1877. Observant, artistic, devoted to his native town, Munroe photographed Concord & its inhabitants extensively during final 25 years of his life.
(Cont.) Member of Concord Antiquarian Society, Social Circle in Concord, Postal Photographic Club, Concord Library Committee & Cemetery Committee. Visited Europe, Fla., N.H., Wis., Minn. Author of Concord Out of Door Sketches (1903), which included examples of his photographic work. Died in Concord July 23, 1904 (result of carriage accident).
