James Jerome Parsons was born on November 15, 1915 in Cortland, New York, where his family lived until relocating to Monrovia, California when he was 13. After graduating high school, Parsons enrolled at Pasadena Junior College before transferring to UC Berkeley, from which he received an AB in economics (1937) and an M.A. in Geography (1939). He was drafted into the army in 1941 and worked as an airphoto analyst in New Caledonia before returning to Berkeley to complete his PhD in Geography. Parsons' academic career started as Assistant Professor until he was promoted to Associate Professor (1952-1960), then to Professor (1960-1986) and finally to Professor Emeritus (1986-1997).
