American Society for Information Science and Technology. Minnesota Chapter.
The Minnesota chapter of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS) was founded in 1968, after a speech given locally by national ASIS president Robert S. Taylor spurred interested persons to hold an organizational meeting on March 19 of that year. The constitution and bylaws were drafted shortly after and a nominating committee was formed. On May 17, 1968, ASIS granted a charter to the Minnesota chapter and the first board meeting was held June 24, 1968. The chapter bylaws were amended in 1970 and again in 1972 in order to comply with wording in the bylaws of the national organization. Originally the Minnesota chapter included Wisconsin, Iowa, and the Dakotas. Wisconsin subsequently formed its own chapter in 1973; the Minnesota chapter still includes Iowa and the Dakotas. Initial membership was thirty-eight.

The national organization's purpose is to advance the information sciences and related applications of information technology by providing focus, opportunity, and support to information professionals and organizations (2001).
The purpose of the Minnesota chapter, as stated in the 1968 constitution, is to provide an organization through which members of ASIS located within this Chapter area may carry forward the programs and purposes of ASIS. The Chapter shall promote the interests of the Society and its program.
The official chapter newsletter, Transfer, started publication in November 1968. As early as 1969 there was discussion about merging the Minnesota chapters of ASIS and SLA (Special Libraries Association). The title of the newsletter was changed to ASIS SLA Minnesota Memo/Transfer in September 1970 to reflect the partnership between ASIS and SLA. Although not officially merged, they began to hold joint meetings and together have published their newsletter, now named SLA/ASIS Bulletin, since 1987.
In 1994, the Minnesota chapter of ASIST was recognized by Metronet's Capitalizing on Collaboration for its work with several other organizations in fostering networking among all types of libraries on issues that are inherent to all of us. Their citation was for Continuing Professional Education Planning Partners.
