The American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel was founded in 1935 by representatives of eight of the leading fund raising consulting firms in the country.

It has developed standards of ethical conduct for fund raisers, monitored state and federal legislation concerning philanthropy and nonprofit organizations, and played an important role in strengthening the nonprofit sector. In 1992, there were approximately 25 member firms in the association, including most of the nation's leading fund raising firms.
