John and Miriam Kennedy volunteered for the Peace Corps taking a leave of absence from Oberlin College administration. They were assigned to an elementary teaching post in Negros Oriental in the Philippines. They formed a night school for graduates of the 6th grade, mainly English courses. They were also assigned to train teachers in Los Banos, and taught a summer course at Teachers Camp in Baguio. They also helped found the Siaton Reading Center with many of their own books. The reading center later became a municipal public library.
