Hide Profile

The first use of ether in an operation at New York Hospital occurred on December 19, 1846 only two months after the first public demonstration of its use by Morton in Boston. New York Hospital had no anesthetist on its staff until Dr. Thomas L. Bennett was appointed in January 1898. The Anesthesiology Dept. was formed in July 1957 by the merger of the sub-departments of anesthesiology in the Deptartments of Surgery and in Obstetrics/Gynecology. The first director was Dr. Joseph F. Artusio, Jr. who had become the first hospital resident in Surgery (Anesthesiology) in 1946. As of 1988, Dr. Artusio remains department chairman.
