Strutt, William, 1825-1915
Variant namesWilliam Stutt was an artist and draughtsman. He was born in 1825 and during the 1840s studied art in Paris. In 1850 he came to Australia and except for eighteen months spent in New Zealand, 1855-1856, he lived in Victoria until he retuned to England in 1862. He is noted for his paintings and drawings of personalities, including John Pascoe Fawkner, Sir Edward Macarthur and Robert O'Hara Burke, and of events, such as the bushfire at Macedon on 1851 Feb. 6, important in the early history of Victoria. After his return to England he continued to paint, notably religious pictures, almost up to the time of his death in 1915.

Strutt was an artist and draughtsman who came to Australia from England in 1850. He returned to London in 1862, and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. He is chiefly remembered for his depiction of the "Black Thursday" bushfire in Victoria, 6th February 1851.

William Strutt came to Australia on the Culloden in 1850 and worked as a lithographer and painter recording many events of historical interest in Victoria during the 1850s. He visited New Zealand in 1855, returning to Melbourne in 1856, and went back to England in 1862.
