Ione Ulrich Sutton (1905-1998) was a financial officer at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City during the 1940s and 1950s. While traveling in Europe with her husband George Sutton Jr. in 1951, she met Dwight D. Eisenhower at NATO headquarters. George Sutton had served under Eisenhower at Camp Colt, Pennsylvania, in 1918. When Eisenhower returned to the United States in 1952 to run for president, Ione Sutton worked as a volunteer at the headquarters of the Citizens for Eisenhower in New York City. The Suttons attended EisenhowerÂ’s inauguration as President in January 1953. She later worked as a volunteer for Citizens for Eisenhower during the 1956 campaign and as a volunteer at the finance committee of the Nixon-Lodge campaign in 1960.
