In September 1985, artist Colleen Barnett opened the Rifle Sport Alternative Art Gallery on the second floor of the Block E building (602 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota), a space formerly occupied by the Rifle Sport arcade. She was later joined by artist Bill Taylor, and they managed the exhibit space until 1988, when the city closed down Block E.
The gallery featured local artists who created thought-provoking non-mainstream art (installation and performance). The gallery hosted the first auto art show, which evolved into Intermedia Arts' "Wheels as Art" annual parade. Macalester College (St. Paul, Minnesota) art professor Ruth Godollei, who helped initiate the auto art show, compiled this collection and was one-time director and curator for the Rifle Sport Gallery.
