Wallace I. Barkeen was born in Denver, Colo. on May 23, 1912 the son of Swedish immigrants. He received a B.S. in horticulture and a lieutenant's commission through the ROTC program at Oklahoma State University in 1940. Barkeen arrived at Camp Hale, Colo. in January 1943. He was assigned to the 85th Infantry Regiment and commanded Companies B and C. Later, Barkeen served as a the regimental S3 (operations officer) for the 85th Infantry Regiment. He retired from the Army in 1960 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
