Arden Ray Chapman served in Company M of the First Regiment of Nebraska, in the Spanish-American War, and in the Philippine Insurrection of 1899. His service took him to the Pacific; his letters home were written in Denver, Pueblo, San Francisco, Hawaii, Manila, and other locations. He was shot in the right forearm in battle, April 23, 1899, and wrote letters home from the hospital with his left hand.
