The Rumph family was a prominent family in Perote, Bullock County (Ala.) They originally migrated from Germany to South Carolina. Dr. James D. Rumph and his wife, Caroline M. Rumph, were the first of the family to migrate to Alabama, settling first in Barbour County and later moving to Bullock County. James Rumph served in the Florida Seminole War of 1836 as a surgeon and practiced his profession in Perote until his death. During the Civil War two of their sons, Christian Wilber and Langdon Leslie served in the Perote Guards, Co. C/G, 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment. After the war, Christian became a planter and politician, serving in the state senate in 1878. Langdon died during the Civil War at Fort Barrancas, Pensacola. Another son, James D., Jr., became a doctor in Perote.
