Variant namesThe Norfolk and Western Railroad, which underwent 200 large and small mergers in the years 1838-1982, originally joined the towns of City Point and Petersburg, Va. Southern Railway had its origins in 1827 as the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company. The company represented here came into existence in 1894, under the direction of Samuel Spencer.
