State University of New York at Buffalo. Office of the President

Hide Profile

In September 1988, the Law Faculty at the State University of New York at Buffalo passed a resolution amending a comprehensive non-discrimination policy to include "sexual orientation" with particular application to employers seeking to recruit at the Law School. Employers using the Law School placement services were required to sign a non-discrimination statement. Military recruiters were not able to sign such a statement and were effectively barred from using Law School facilities. The subsequent controversy received substantial press and the President of the university, Steven Sample, ultimately issued a statement overruling the resolution in May 1989. On October 2, 1987, the Law Faculty passed a "Faculty Statement Regarding Intellectual Freedom, Intolerance, and Prohibited Harassment" following acts of intimidation against certain students the previous spring.
