Born circa 1815 in Virginia, William Johns Hamlett came to Texas in 1835. He first settled in San Augustine, later moving to Shelby County and from there to Anderson County. He and his wife, Mariah Jane Barrett Hamlett (circa 1818-circa 1876), were the parents of six children. Following his wife’s death, William Johns Hamlett married Nancy Petty. He died in Anderson County in 1891 December.

William J. Hamlett, Jr., was born in Shelby County, Texas, in 1842. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and later farmed in various locations. In 1865 he married Elizabeth McDaniel.
