Robert J. Baptista was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and attended the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey from which he received his B.S. degree in 1966 and his PhD in 1972. He has been employed by the Verona Dyestuffs Corporation, Mobay and Miles, Inc. among others. In 1972 he began his employment with the Verona Dyestuffs Corporation, a division of the Mobay Corporation, and from 1981 to 1986 he was in charge of manufacturing operations at their newly-acquired Damascus, West Virginia plant. From 1987 to 1993 he was plant manager at the Harmon Colors Haledon, New Jersey plant. (Harmon was another division of the Mobay Corporation.) In 1994 Baptista was named Vice President Rubber Manufacturing U.S.A. for Miles, Inc. and moved to Orange, Texas. He retired from this position in 2000. In 2002-2003 he served as Executive Director of the Chemical Alliance, an initiative aimed at promoting new investment in the chemical industry of the state of West Virginia. Robert J. Baptista remains a resident of Orange, Texas and spends much of time documenting and writing about the colorants industry in the United States, additionally, he maintains a website where digital versions of much of this material has been posted.
