In 1872, Francis Marion Smith discovered borate near his cabin in Teel's Marsh, Nevada, founding the Pacific Coast Borax Company. In 1891, the focus of the company shifted to Death Valley from Teel's Marsh, as disclosed in correspondence to Teel's Marsh superintendent J.H. Strachan.
