Born Harriet Lake on Jan. 22, 1909 in Valley City, ND; educated at Univ. of WA; trained as a vocalist by her mother; made her film debut (1929) in small parts then headed for Broadway; returned to films (1933) and played lighthearted heroines in B pictures for Columbia and RKO; moved to MGM (1939) and gained popularity in the series Maisie; started a successful television career (1950s) in her own shows, Private Secretary and later The Ann Sothern show; her numerous film credits include: Lady be good, Panama Hattie, Cry havoc, and A letter to three wives.
