Glasgow University Boat Club (student society : 1877-:)

Hide Profile

Glasgow University Boat Club has been existence since 1877 , when the first Edinburgh vs Glasgow Universities Boat Race was held, but was independent of Glasgow University Athletic Club . The club was formed to encourage the pursuit of aquatic sports in the University of Glasgow and was open to all members of Glasgow University Athletic Club who held amateur status. It was originally run by a committee consisting of an honorary president, honorary vice president, captain, secretary, treasurer, three ordinary members, and was augmented later by members in charge of boats, clubhouse and steps, and a social secretary.

The club affiliated to GUAC in 1919 , but kept its finances separate until the late 1920s. An Annual General Meeting of the club was held each year at which the office bearers and the committee were appointed and the treasurer‰??s report read. Meetings of the club took place at the Glasgow University Union and also at the Boathouse, Glasgow Green, New Gorbals, which the club took entry of in 1924 . The meetings involved the arrangement of fixtures, practice times, fundraising events, and decisions on the repair and acquisition of boats. The club‰??s fundraising events included regattas, prize draws, suppers and, in 1921, a play What Every Woman Knows by Sir J M Barrie. The club has competed against other University Boat Clubs from around the United Kingdom including their historic rivals, Edinburgh, and in 1924 travelled to Norway to compete against Christiania University. The Club also played host to rowers from the USSR in 1991 and paid them a return visit the same year, travelling to Moscow to compete. By 1934 the club had over 40 members; the same membership figure was also recorded in 1987. A women's section was added in 1966. In 2002 , the Club continues to meet.
