Edward William (Bill) Christiansen was born in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1914. He graduated from Fargo High School and North Dakota State University. In 1947 he moved to Hardin, Montana, where he was part owner of Hardin Auto. He was active in volunteer work in Hardin. Christiansen served 8 years in the Montana House of Representatives. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1972, the last election where the Governor and Lieutenant Governor ran independently. He served one term of office from 1973-1977. He died March 28, 2000.
