Luis de Unzaga y Amézaga was the first Spanish Louisiana governor (1769 - 1777). Born in Malaga, Spain, he joined the military early in his life, taking part in the military operations of Charles of Naples against Austria. In 1769 he was appointed governor of Louisiana to succeed Alexander O'Reilly, who had incurred the disfavor of creoles and was removed by home government. After service in Louisiana, he was promoted and appointed captain general of Caracas. Unzaga y Amézaga later headed the general government of Cuba.
