The office of County Executive was created in 1937; duties of the County Executive include appointing comissioners, directing county departments, presenting the annual budget, reporting to the Board of Legislators, and approving or vetoing legislation.

Edwin G. Michaelian (1906-1983) served as County Executive from 1958 to 1973, having previously served in elected positions in White Plains. After his term as County Executive, Michaelian founded and directed Pace University's Institute for Sub/Urban Governance.
