Josiah Dillard served as a teacher, principal and institutional instructor. A native of southern Illinois, Mr. Dillard grew up in Stonefort. His father was a Civil War veteran, having served in the 31st Illinois regiment under John A. Logan. Josiah taught at the Stonefort Public School prior to 1893, and served as its principal from 1894 through 1895. In the summer of 1895, he completed the Pedagogical Course of Study at Arkansas Normal College. He also attended Southern Illinois Normal University. In 1905, Mr. Dillard received his certificate in Accountancy from Lincoln Business College. Shortly afterward, he accepted a position with the United States Treasury Department as a chief clerk.
