The responsibility of this office is the general management of the American Institute of Physics. Sawyer was acting director of the American Institute of Physics from the retirement of Elmer Hutchisson in October 1964 until the appointment of Williams in April 1965. Williams died in office in May 1966 at which point Sawyer resumed the duties of acting director until the appointment of H. William Koch at the end of 1966.
