John F. Toepp was born Sept. 25, 1927, in Mansfield, Ohio. He received his B.A. from Mahar Business College in 1944, and did post-graduate work at Western Michigan University. He was a professional basketball announcer for the NBA (1940) and later became a newscaster and sports director for radio station WATT in Cadillac. He was elected to the State House in 1962 and a state senator of the 36th Michigan District in 1966. He earned a reputation for his efforts in the areas of law enforcement and educational legislation. He left the Senate in 1978, becoming a lobbyist. He died Apr. 24, 1979.
