Hide Profile

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) can trace its origins to the founding of the Rochester Athenaeum in 1829. After joining with several different Rochester institutions during the 19th century, the Athenaeum finally merged with the Mechanics Institute (founded in 1885) in 1891 to form the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (RAMI). RAMI changed its name to the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1944 to better reflect the university's role in the field of technical education. Over the years, new programs were added and the enrollment figures for the school drastically increased. For instance, in 2005 the university received approval for a new graduate degree program--a Master of Science in Learning and Knowledge Management. According to the proposal, the program was to focus on "the creation of learning experiences, performance support, and knowledge management systems that enable people to learn where, when, and how fast they need." Students were expected to find jobs as learning specialists and knowledge management leaders for companies, government organizations, and higher education institutions. As of 2011, this program was still offered at the university.
