Fort Apache (Ariz.)

Historical note: Fort Apache was established in 1870; after undergoing several name changes it was named Fort Apache in April 1879. The post was located between the Navajo and Apache peoples and increased in importance when several Apache groups were gathered at the San Carlos Indian Reservation. The post commissary issued food and other supplies to soldiers, officers, Indian scouts, and civilian employees.
