James Millar Hamilton was an arts and science student at the University of Glasgow from 1931-1936 . In his first year, 1931-1932 he studied Maths, Chemistry and Natural Philosophy. The following year, 1932-1933, he studied Maths, Natural Philosophy, Latin and Astronomy. In his third year, 1933-1934, he studied History, Astronomy, Maths and natural Philosophy. In his fourth year, 1934-1935, he studied Maths, Natural Philosophy and Astronomy. In his fifth and final year, 1952-1953, he studied Maths and Natural Philosophy. James Hamilton graduated MA in 1934 and BSc (First Class Honours) in Astronomy in 1936 .

He worked as a rector and died on 27 Ocotber 1983.
