Biographical note: George McCalla Spears was a native of Georgetown and graduated from Georgetown College in 1890. After graduating he relocated in Dallas, Texas where he was in business for many years. He authored numerous poems, many of which were collected in his CANDLES AGAINST THE DARK (1940). In 1941, Spears returned to Georgetown where he resided until his death in 1956.
