Young man from Newton, Ill. joined the CCC in 1937 and worked for six months in Michigan and Illinois with the Forestry Service and then another 18 months in Lawrenceville and Paris, Ill. He had had one year of college and after six months with the CCC, he went back to school but due to financial problems he returned to the CCC. He served in the kitchen at the camp in Lawrenceville, Ill. and then in Paris, Ill. as assistant to the education leader, teaching history and a bible class. He left the CCC in 1940 and joined the army.
