Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, located in Deer Isle, Maine, was founded in 1950 by a group of craft artists in Belfast, Maine. The school gained financial support from Mary Beasom Bishop, a resident of Flint, Michigan who had a summer home in the area. Francis S. Merritt was its first director; his wife Priscilla Merritt was also actively involved in its administration. The school offers studio-based workshops in such things as clay, glass, metals, paper, woodworking, etc.
