Robert D. Newton was born in Oregon in 1917 and enlisted in the Army in November 1940. At the time of his enlistment he was single, had a grammar school education and was working as a lumberman or raftsman. Newton joined the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Lewis, Wash., and also served at Camp Hale, Colo.; Fort Ord, Calif.; Kiska, Alaska; Camp Carson, Colo.; Camp Swift, Tex.; and Italy. He was assigned to Company H and then Company E of the 87th Regiment Medical Detachment, later with Headquarters of the 2nd Battalion. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his actions near Tole in April 1945 where he was later wounded in action. Newton achieved the rank of Technician Grade 4. He died in Calif. in 2001.
