Harris I. Haffner was born in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1925 and enlisted in the Army at New Cumberland, Pa. in 1943. At the time of enlistment he was unmarried and had completed four years of high school. Haffner joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. and was assigned to Battery B of the 604th Field Artillery Battalion. He was also stationed at Camp Swift, Tex. before being deployed to Italy where he engaged in combat against German forces. Haffner attained the rank of Technician Grade 5.
