Thomas Burnside (1778?-1815?), a native of New Hampshire, was hampered by poor health as a youth. He worked as a farm laborer and school teacher before attending an academy in Haverhill, N.H., in early 1801. Later that year, he started as an apprentice physician to Dr. Carleton of Haverhill. He worked as a physician in Plymouth, N.H., in 1805, alternating this with attendance at medical lectures at Dartmouth, from which he received a Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1807. He practiced for a short time in Thornton, N.H. (c. 1810) before moving to Westborough, Mass., in April 1810, where he was practicing when he received his M.D. from Dartmouth in 1812.
