James Lane Allen, Kentucky's first important novelist, was born near Lexington in 1849. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from what is now Transylvania University and taught in Missouri, West Virginia, and Kentucky before turning to full-time writing. His first book, FLUTE AND VIOLIN AND OTHER KENTUCKTY TALES AND ROMANCES, included his well-known short story "King Solomon of Kentucky." Other books included THE BLUE-GRASS REGION OF KENTUCKY, JOHN GRAY, KENTUCKY CARDINAL, THE METTLE OF THE PASTURE, AND THE DOCTOR'S CHRISTMAS EVE. Allen lived in New York after 1893 and died there on February 18, 1925. He was buried in Kentucky at the Lexington Cemetery.
