What is now the Cooper-Hewitt Museum's membership program existed informally for many years but was formally organized in 1976. The aim of the program is to increase support, especially financial support, for the programs of the Museum. The office has been attached to various other offices concerned with the development function over the years. At present it reports to the Director of Development and Marketing. Mary Kerr was Manager, Department of Membership and Programs, 1976-1982. Apparently the position was vacant in 1983 but was filled by Carmel Wilson, 1984; Donna Steffins, 1985; and Susan Sweetser, 1986. George Nichols served as Membership Officer, 1987, and Membership and Development Officer, 1988. Judy Soffian served as Membership Officer in 1989. From 1990 to 1992 Michele Raphoon was Membership and Special Events Coordinator. Carolyn Harper was Coordinator, 1993-1994. From 1995 to 1999 Marla Musick was Membership and Volunteer Coordinator, succeeded by Nadine Slowik, 2000- .
