Born in Adair county, Ky., Marvin Nell moved to Frankfort in 1896, and married James Samuel Darnell in 1901. She was appointed director and executive secretary of the first Kentucky State Park Commission by Governor Flem Sampson in 1928. As such, she was instrumental in securing federal funds for the George Rogers Clark federal monument at Pioneer Memorial State Park in Harrodsburg. She also participated in the dedication of the Lincoln Marriage Temple in 1931. Mrs. Darnell was very active in Republican party politics, both on the speaking circuit and at the organizational level. She was also very active in women's club activities.
