Professor of International Studies. George McTurnan Kahin graduated from Harvard University in 1940 and completed graduate work at Stanford University and Johns Hopkins University. He served in the Army during World War II, and lived in Indonesia from 1948-1949, during the peak of Indonesia's war for independence. He came to Cornell in 1951 as an assistant professor of government and executive director of the newly formed Southeast Asia Program. He served as director of the program until 1970, and also founded the Cornell Modern Indonesia Project in 1954, and directed it until his retirement in 1988.
