Editor of the El Paso newspaper "The Lone Star," from 1881 to 1886.

Born in Richmond, Kentucky, in 1846, and educated in St. Louis, Missouri, Newman moved to New Mexico in 1866 where he started out as a school teacher before becoming a journalist. He was the editor of several newspapers in New Mexico, including the "Las Vegas Weekly Mail, " "Thirty-four" in Las Cruces, and "El Demócrata" in Mesilla. After his controversial career as a journalist, Newman became general agent for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York for New Mexico and West Texas. He died of cancer in El Paso, Texas, in 1915.
