Sewell came to Tucson in 1919 to be the Tucson Public Schools director of band instruction. Sewell directed the Tucson High School orchestra for 37 years and was assistant conductor of the Tucson Symphony. Sewell composed music; his most popular piece was "March of the WAC" dedicated to Major Betty Bandel of Tucson who was head of the local WAC military unit during World War II.
