The Hofwyl Plantation papers were created by the Dent, Troup, McIntosh, and Brailsford families who acquired and inhabited the plantation during the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. The marriage of Miriam Gratz Cohen, daughter of a Savannah Jewish lawyer, Solomon Cohen, to James Troup Dent, grandson of James M. Troup, physician and planter, united two very different families and produced the last generation of Hofwyl Plantation owners, Gratz, Miriam G., and Ophelia T. Dent. After the property became an historic site, the papers were loaned to the Archives for processing and microfilming.
