Brown, John Marshall, 1838-1907
Variant namesSon of John Bundy Brown and Ann Matilda (Greely) Brown, of Portland, Me.; attended Gould Academy, Phillips Andover Academy, and Bowdoin College (class of 1860); studied law but after graduation became a U.S. Army officer, participating in various Civil War battles; returned to Portland in 1864 after being wounded and joined his father's business J.B. Brown & Sons, with his older brother Philip Henry Brown; also involved in the Portland Sugar Company and the management of a hotel; m. Alida Catherine Carroll, of Washington, D.C.; involved in many local organizations; d. at summer home in Falmouth Foreside.
