Matthes, George,
Educated in engineering, George "Red" Matthes joined LSU's staff as the superintendent of buildings in 1929. In 1931, he became an engineering faculty member in addition to serving in campus purchasing and as the interim comptroller. In 1947 he became head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, where he remained until 1961. He continued as an engineering professor until his retirement in 1969.
