Orton, Arthur, 1834-1898
Variant namesRoger Tichborne (b. 1829), heir to an ancient Hampshire baronetcy, was reported to have drowned off South America in 1854. His mother, refusing to accept his death, placed world-wide advertisements seeking her son. Arthur Orton claimed to be Tichborne, a claim which was disputed in a civil action in 1871-1872 resulting in Orton being charged with perjury and gaoled.
