Scottish immigrants to South Carolina. Duncan McRae (1754-1824) came to South Carolina from Rosshire, Scotland before the Revolutionary War and eventually settled in Camden, South Carolina, where he became a merchant. Duncan McRae married Mary Chesnut (1771-1843) in 1789 and was partner with Zachariah Cantey (1759-1822) in McRae & Cantey, a mercantile and milling business in Camden. John McRae (ca. 1809-1891) emigrated from Scotland about 1840 and married his cousin Scota (the youngest daughter of Duncan McRae). John McRae was chief engineer of the Columbia and Greenville Railroad and later the South Carolina Railroad.
