Green was born in Provo, Utah, the seventh of ten children to Jon and Karen Green - both of which were college educated, the former a professor at Brigham Young University. Green served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Sapporo, Japan was well as studying abroad in London, Paris and Vienna. Green attended Brigham Young University where he majored in English.
