Robert Archibald Bryden was born in Glasgow in 1907 , the son of Andrew Francis Stuart Archibald, architect (deceased by 1925). Robert matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1925 and studied Latin and Greek (Ordinary). In 1926 he took Roman History (Intermediate), Greek (Intermediate) and Logic. In 1927 he studied Latin and Greek (Honours) and Moral Philosophy and finally History and Geology in 1928. He graduated with an MA in June 1929 . He was a teacher in England and lived in Somerset.
