The Board of Trustees was established at the founding of Boston College in 1863 and for many years was the sole governing agency of the university. With the creation of a Board of Directors in 1968 the Board of Trustees retained certain responsibilities. In 1972 both bodies were consolidated into a Board of Trustees composed of Jesuits and laymen and women.
